The new immigration law is full of "surprises". For example, it provides for suspending the issuance of TUA for 5 years if, "having assessed the impact on national security or the country's economic development in connection with the number of foreigners in the country and their concentration in a specific territory, the Cabinet of Ministers determines which third-country nationals and for what period the issuance of the relevant TUA permits is suspended." But this provision applies only (!) to investors in the share capital of SIA and in investment funds. How many of them are there and will there be, compared with workers and students? Are Latvia's residents worried about a concentration of millionaires in their neighbourhoods? There is also a very dangerous provision on delegating document checks to "outsourcing providers", which could be interested private companies. In short - the immigration gates are open wider, but to reassure the public, a few seemingly strict provisions have been included that in fact apply to relatively small categories of immigrants.
