🇱🇻 Today Latvia did not support the draft decision prepared by the Irish presidency.
The situation is not simple. Extending sanctions requires the consent of all 27 EU member states. If no agreement is reached by the deadline, the retention of sanctions for the entire list is endangered, not just for Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman.
Extending sanctions for 36 months would be the right step. However, the price for that must not be the simple removal of both individuals from the sanctions list. Latvia cannot accept such an offer.
🇪🇺 Therefore, tomorrow together with Foreign Minister @Braze_Baiba we will work with Brussels and Paris to find a solution that MATCHES Latvia's interests. We will seek support for Latvia's position WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION.
I have convened an extraordinary Cabinet meeting for tomorrow on this matter.
🇺🇦 While Russia continues the war, European pressure must become stronger, not more comfortable for the Kremlin.

@Heinrih5 If we remember that Brēmanis, as a cruel stab, had put on the council's agenda the construction of a parallel bridge next to Vanšu bridge for 89M, everything falls into place.
Most likely, the leadership of the Riga City Council has been taken over by clowns. They sign a contract for 85 million for the repair of the Vanšu bridge, then only start thinking about what to do with traffic management, then the mayor for 20 million wants a pontoon bridge, the vice mayor calls it a stupid idea. Just like Briškens with Rail Baltica. https://t.co/9l4j8QpwkN

@Raivis40118307@AndrisKulbergs@Apvienotais_ For particularly slow ones - to get Saudi Arabian oil, you have to go through Hormuz. There is a second option - a pipeline from Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea, but that, firstly, has been bombed and even intact doesn't provide a large flow, and secondly - to get to it, you have to go past the Houthis.
Latvia's government position has been unchanged. EU sanctions against Russia must be strengthened, not weakened. Therefore Latvia cannot agree to the widespread offer. One must ask those countries about other countries' positions.

“Russian sub-conventional activity will increase.”
Latvia Foreign Minister Baiba Braže warns that as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, Europe could see an increase in cyberattacks, sabotage and hostile information operations https://t.co/qg1DSXmikjhttps://t.co/fVApI1Tbel

Russia will increase its acts of sabotage against European NATO members in a bid to deter support to Ukraine, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said https://t.co/lelFPVvZ9a
Joined a side-event on Belarus at the EU Delegation in New York, alongside @Braze_Baiba, @Tsihanouskaya, @alain_berset, @TKajzer, @KajsaOllongren, @jamiemfly, and other partners.
Belarus is Russia's accomplice in the war against Ukraine. Its territory, infrastructure, and resources continue to serve Russia's war machine.
Belarusian oil refineries are fueling Russia's war effort, and signal relay equipment on Belarusian soil is used to support drone attacks against us.
Belarus's other borders have long been exploited for security threats against Europe, including irregular migration used to destabilize our neighbors.
Lukashenka and his regime's senior officials must face justice before the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, just like Putin and his circle.
There can be no wishful thinking about the Minsk regime — it has no independent agency from Moscow. Pressure on both regimes must be applied without exceptions or compromises.
We must also distinguish Lukashenka's regime from the Belarusian people, who made their democratic choice clear in 2020. A free Belarus is not just a dream — it is essential to the security of our whole region. Easing pressure now would send Moscow and Minsk exactly the wrong signal: that aggression pays off.
I want to separately highlight our cooperation with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, whose briefing was part of today's event.
Ukraine has strengthened its dialogue with her and the Belarusian democratic forces, and I support the sanctions proposals she and her team have put forward.
At @MFA_Ukraine we appointed Ambassador-at-Large for Cooperation with Belarusian Democratic Forces to deepen this partnership.
