The deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children is a crime, and Russia must not be allowed to turn it into a fait accompli. Our goal is the return of every Ukrainian child and accountability for everyone involved.
In August, 103 Ukrainian children were brought home, bringing the total to 2,525. But the work is far from over.
There is important progress. The EU is preparing sanctions against 27 Russian individuals and entities linked to the deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children. Lithuania has allocated €600,000 to Ukrainian organisations working on returns and rehabilitation. New Zealand has joined the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children as its 51st member.
Together with Canada and Norway, we are preparing the International Conference on Returning Ukrainian Children, Detained Civilians and Prisoners of War in Toronto. The return of our children will be high on the agenda.
I thank everyone who is turning international solidarity into concrete action. We need to widen the Coalition, increase pressure on Russia, identify and sanction every person and entity involved in these crimes, and strengthen the mechanisms that help us locate and return our children.
Russia must not be allowed to steal Ukrainian children, erase their identity, place them in Russian families, or turn them against their own country and face no consequences.
Every stolen or deported Ukrainian child must come home. There can be no comprehensive and lasting peace without bringing Ukraine’s children home.
