From@liana_langaThere are no migrant gangs in Latvia yet, but there will be, just like in other countries! The main thing is to act preventively and not allow them to form! Let us not be shortsighted, stupid fools who are unable to analyze other countries' experiences, draw conclusions, and act! https://t.co/xRbZYneTEX

@DagnijaNeimane @AlvisHermanis1 Thanks for that, but yes, you kicked us out of 'Aizliegtais paņēmiens' and some youth activities. Five people voted fewer than us in the online poll — thanks, bye.
From@DagnijaNeimaneFor clarity - MMN is still invited to participate in all of LTV1's major regional debates (next in Jelgava on September 3 with Zemgale region leaders) and in the program cycle “Party in Focus”, which starts on Monday - specifically with the participation of MMN list leaders. @AlvisHermanis1 https://t.co/EI5znYBH8M

Latvia strongly condemns the terrorist acts committed by Russia against the civilian population of Ukraine. This violence must be stopped with maximum sanctions pressure against the aggressor state. Such a state must not be allowed to participate in international sports and cultural events, and its citizens must not enjoy the hospitality of European tourism. Condolences to all victims and their relatives.
From@r_stefanchukWe call on our partners to respond to these latest russian crimes with stronger pressure, tougher sanctions, and increased support for Ukraine. As a result of the russian strike on the Bucha district of the Kyiv region on the evening of August 28, 27 people have been confirmed dead. The toll may still rise. Among those killed was Taras Didych, Head of the Dmytrivka Community, who was among the first to arrive at the scene. Another 42 people were injured, including four children. Seven remain hospitalised. A total of 381 people, including 59 children, have been evacuated from the danger zone. Search-and-rescue and firefighting operations are still ongoing. Preliminary reports indicate that around 50 residential buildings were damaged. My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed. Eternal memory to the victims. This crime must be condemned. And condemnation must be followed by action. @SpeakerJohnson @LindsayHoyle_MP @YaelBRAUNPIVET @gerard_larcher @JuliaKloeckner @HoCSpeaker @Fontana3Lorenzo @Ignazio_LaRussa @Sveinbjarnar65 @MasudGh @andreasostgote @SoerenGade @Halla_aho @LauriHussar @DaigaMierina @juozas_olekas @M_K_Blonska @wlodekczarzasty @Vystrcil_Milos @F_Armengol @vincentblondel @PeterDeRoover1 @ClaudeWiseler @AbrudeanMircea @AnnitaDemetriou @Igor_Grosu_md @alensimonyan @anabrnabic @EP_President @PACE_President @MarcosPerestre1 @perejoanpons

From@AlvisHermanis1After the last corner poll, ratings surprisingly differed from Kaktiņa's poll. But there is no reason to doubt their credibility either. The situation changes from day to day, as can be seen. Kaktiņa's latest poll served as a pretext to kick MMN out of all state media and Delfi debates, because, look, it's below 2%. We change the rules. From now on, only parties that have gathered at least 60% in the latest ratings may be admitted to the debates. Just because we want to.

The new Liepāja prison has been built in accordance with Latvian and international requirements, and its purpose is not only to keep people behind closed doors but to ensure safe, lawful, and resocialization-oriented execution of sentences, comments the Minister of Justice Edvards Smiltēns (AS) regarding the prisoners' hunger strike. https://t.co/GJ7QDO1CFf
From@ltvzinasThe Liepāja prison is the most modern and safest in the Baltic states. Officials describe it as a new prison. However, several inmates transferred there from Jelgava have complaints, and they have started a hunger strike. The main objections are that walking opportunities are limited and ventilation is poor. The prison administration denies this. 🖥️ https://t.co/jM17tYLWbr

From@JazepsBaskoPoll results indicate either an impenetrable Twitter bubble wall, or that Latvia will soon have a new electoral order. More than 60% of Twitter voters say they will vote for @partijaMMN. A tweet based on thirty-nine data points. There is no reason to doubt it. Today at 12:00 in Kauguri you will be able to meet both me and our most well-known faces Alvis Hermanis and Ainārs Mielavs, as well as many other candidates from Vidzeme and other regions, who tirelessly tour all over Latvia to pierce the Twitter and other bubbles.

Iceland decides today whether to restart negotiations on joining the European Union. It is important to understand that this is not yet a vote on Iceland's membership in the EU. If negotiations are restarted and concluded, Icelanders will have to vote again on the final decision. The biggest concerns in Icelandic society are about fisheries, natural resources and national sovereignty. On the other hand, in favor of restarting negotiations speak security, economic stability and the opportunity to participate in the adoption of those European rules that Iceland already largely follows. Does the geopolitical situation force Europe to again think of the European Union as a political and security union, not just a common market. Iceland's accession would strengthen both the security of Europe's northern region and the European Union itself. It would also be a positive signal for the broader EU enlargement process with Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine and Moldova. I hope Iceland will choose to continue negotiations today. For a united, stronger and safer Europe!
From@NewsHourFor many countries in Europe that recall living under Soviet occupation, the specter of the Russian threat is never far from mind. Many of those nations are now part of the alliance built to repel that threat: NATO. That includes Latvia, which borders Russia to the west. @nickschifrin spoke with its foreign minister Thursday to discuss an active week of high-profile diplomacy.

From@oana_toiuI am grateful to my Latvian counterpart, Baiba Braže, for the invitation to Riga, for the warm reception and for the excellent political consultations we had today. This is a landmark year for us: we mark 105 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries and 35 years since their re-establishment in 1991. With Romania's first resident ambassador in Riga and the inauguration of our Embassy's headquarters today, we open a new chapter in bilateral relations. Since 2022, bilateral trade has accelerated, reaching a record level of 220 million euros last year. There is potential for much more, especially in investments, advanced technologies, cybersecurity, agriculture, and energy. As Allies on the Eastern Flank, 🇷🇴 and 🇱🇻 have a similar assessment of the security environment. Both countries have faced intense drone incursions in recent months. These incursions remind us that Russia's war generates risks far beyond Ukraine and that the answer lies in closer allied coordination and stronger national and collective capabilities. Romania contributed again this year to the NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic states, from April to July. Allied solidarity means more than a commitment: it means aircraft on alert above the skies of allies. I thanked Latvia for the solidarity it has consistently shown Romania after the drone incidents on our territory. We agreed to continue support for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, to advance the EU enlargement process, and to keep regional security and economic convergence at the center of the future Multiannual Financial Framework. Romania fully supports Latvia's priorities in its current mandate on the UN Security Council. Thanks, Latvia! 🇷🇴🇱🇻

From@J_HermanisThis year in Latvia 🇱🇻, no more than 19 thousand first-graders are expected to start school 🏫, which is even fewer than before - because the number of births is steadily declining 📉, and families with children 👨👩👧👦 do not receive sufficient support from the state. And over the next 7 years, the number of first-graders will decrease by another ~40%, because this year only 11.5 thousand children will be born, who will have to go to school in 2033. "We change the rules" will increase the PIT (personal income tax) relief for each dependent child from 250 to 500 EUR per month. Parents should be granted the right to vote on behalf of their minor children in elections.

From@EdvardsSmiltensAbout the Liepāja prison 'hunger strike'! Prisoner complaints are being checked, their rights are respected, but the public also needs to know and understand the full picture. On Monday, seven convicts refused the food provided by Liepāja prison. On Friday, there were four. At the same time, these people shop at the prison store and consume food they have purchased themselves. So this is not about dozens of people actually starving, but about refusing the food offered by the prison. Walks in the fresh air are provided in accordance with regulations – not less than one hour per day. Air quality in cells is ensured by mechanical ventilation. The system meets the requirements, maintenance is performed, and no defects have been found. Prisoners' objections are actually about the fact that cell windows cannot be opened. That is not a construction error, but a deliberate security solution to prevent unauthorized communication between cells, the circulation of prohibited items, and other manifestations of prison subculture. The new Liepāja prison is built according to Latvian and international requirements. Its purpose is not just to keep people behind closed doors, but to ensure a safe, lawful and resocialization-oriented execution of sentences. Resistance to the new order was predictable. Some prisoners are accustomed to the old prison environment and its informal rules. Refusing prison food, resocialization measures, or other forms of collective protest are one way to try to achieve the restoration of the old order. The prison administration continues a dialogue with prisoners and checks each specific complaint. If any deficiency is found, it will be addressed. However, the state will not back down from security requirements and the goal of reducing the influence of prison subculture. The human dignity and rights of prisoners must be respected. At the same time, lawful execution of sentences and public safety are not negotiable.

As we discussed with employers today. We have a bunch of laws and regulations that require allocating funding to various sectors as a certain % of GDP. And there, when adding up, about one billion euros is missing. For a long time. That is on top of the already existing deficit (borrowed money) of 2 billion per year. It will never be fulfilled, even theoretically impossible. Such regulations should be thrown in the trash. There is a list.
From@KuskisParties that do not make such a budget correction are leading Latvia to destruction. At least a 30% cut in the bureaucratic service, as well as reduced state intervention in business. Also culture and sports. The state does not owe athletes. @guntarsv give 'chainsaws' to ministers to sharpen. Also @AndrisKulbergs https://t.co/r17V5J9i8B

From@AndrisKulbergsI have not supported and do not support state funding intended for the Bridge federation. I want to remind that the aim of the government decision of 16 June was to support the hosting of international championships, not to allocate funding to one specific sport. The aim of the Cabinet of Ministers' decision was to help Latvia attract and host international sports championships, not to cover expenses after the fact for events already held for one specific sport. At the Cabinet meeting, both in the protocol and in the audio recording, it was clearly explained that such funding could be allocated in an open competition with all sports federations participating - in the future, not for an already ongoing event. I also have a specific question about the planned 14,000 euros for 'evaluation of competition results, as well as development of new, transparent and uniform criteria.' If this sum is needed to develop transparent and verifiable procurement criteria after the funding distribution, a legitimate question arises: on exactly what criteria were the 225,000 euros distributed this time? I believe that the Ministry of Education and Science must submit a calculation of this sum, the source of funding, and procurement documents, and must justify why this work cannot be done by officials of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Economics, whom the Cabinet has already tasked with monitoring the competition results. I am not clear what the employees of the Ministry of Education and Science are doing, if an external evaluator needs to be hired for 14k EUR? This waste and the constant engagement of meaningless consultants must be stopped.
