About the Liepāja prison 'hunger strike'!
Prisoner complaints are being checked, their rights are respected, but the public also needs to know and understand the full picture.
On Monday, seven convicts refused the food provided by Liepāja prison. On Friday, there were four. At the same time, these people shop at the prison store and consume food they have purchased themselves. So this is not about dozens of people actually starving, but about refusing the food offered by the prison.
Walks in the fresh air are provided in accordance with regulations – not less than one hour per day.
Air quality in cells is ensured by mechanical ventilation. The system meets the requirements, maintenance is performed, and no defects have been found. Prisoners' objections are actually about the fact that cell windows cannot be opened. That is not a construction error, but a deliberate security solution to prevent unauthorized communication between cells, the circulation of prohibited items, and other manifestations of prison subculture.
The new Liepāja prison is built according to Latvian and international requirements. Its purpose is not just to keep people behind closed doors, but to ensure a safe, lawful and resocialization-oriented execution of sentences.
Resistance to the new order was predictable. Some prisoners are accustomed to the old prison environment and its informal rules. Refusing prison food, resocialization measures, or other forms of collective protest are one way to try to achieve the restoration of the old order.
The prison administration continues a dialogue with prisoners and checks each specific complaint. If any deficiency is found, it will be addressed. However, the state will not back down from security requirements and the goal of reducing the influence of prison subculture.
The human dignity and rights of prisoners must be respected. At the same time, lawful execution of sentences and public safety are not negotiable.
Liepāja prison is the most modern and safest in the Baltic states. Officials describe the new prison this way. However, several prisoners transferred there from Jelgava have complaints and have started a hunger strike. Main objections – limited opportunities for walks and poor ventilation. Prison management denies this.

Juris Pūce (@pucej): In Latvia, a system has developed where, to receive a quality healthcare service, you often need both connections and your own money. This is a deeply unjust model for everyone. 🎾 “Latvijas attīstībai” has a broad reform proposal in healthcare that will make the service accessible and quality for everyone!

We want to live like in Finland, but we don't want to do anything... On @tv24_lv program Nacionālo interešu klubs we talked about the large investment projects in Latvia's energy sector. https://t.co/OOUqwiYruh
🏛️Budget 2026. In 7 months! 📈Total revenue: +10.3% (+1.1 billion) 📉Total expenditure: +5.5% (+0.6 billion) 🇱🇻This year in Latvia the wage fund, salaries and thus PIT revenues grow unusually slowly. As @NakotnesForums has previously written, Latvia has one of the highest shares of wage expenditure in GDP in the EU, which in the long term hampers companies' investment capacity, and it seems that companies are currently exhausting their resources for wage increases after a 3-year economic recession. • Excise tax significantly lags behind the plan due to ill-considered 🚬🍺 bans; • CIT is in a big minus due to the rate increase in 2025. 😎However, the average pension rose to 673 euros and after indexation on October 1 it will exceed the 700€ threshold.
Together with Foreign Minister 🇱🇻 Baiba Braže, we inaugurated today the premises of the Romanian Embassy in Riga.
The data behind this moment deserve to be recalled. 105 years of diplomatic relations. 35 years since their re-establishment. And H.E. Mr. Sergiu Nistor is the first resident ambassador of Romania in Latvia.
💬“Today, by opening this new seat of the Romanian Embassy, we are not only celebrating the friendship between Romania and Latvia: we are looking with confidence towards its future.”
A permanent presence in Riga opens new perspectives. More political dialogue. Deeper cooperation in the fields of defense, technology, energy and education. Closer ties between our business communities and between our citizens, supported, since 2023, also by direct flights between Bucharest and Riga.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže this week hosted a Women in Business lunch meeting. An Inspiring conversation on entrepreneurship, investment and leadership, highlighting the strong cooperation between 🇸🇪 and 🇱🇻 💡💪 https://t.co/AWJPOjEmdB

Jeez, Valainis has outdone himself. This is extra-level idiocy, who has no idea what 2G is. And he is a minister who probably approaches his daily duties the same way with real consequences. ZZS's death cannot come soon enough https://t.co/jMpRpPvIYN
Wait… he himself took a complaint to KNAB? There is no bigger Šlesers AI trash spouter on the internet than Ainārs himself. Or do we have a law that allows making AI crap only ABOUT Šlesers? https://t.co/1XiHhxM9IK
This year in Latvia 🇱🇻, no more than 19 thousand first-graders are expected to start school 🏫, which is even fewer than before - because the number of births is steadily declining 📉, and families with children 👨👩👧👦 do not receive sufficient support from the state. And over the next 7 years, the number of first-graders will decrease by another ~40%, because this year only 11.5 thousand children will be born, who will have to go to school in 2033.
"We change the rules" will increase the PIT (personal income tax) relief for each dependent child from 250 to 500 EUR per month. Parents should be granted the right to vote on behalf of their minor children in elections.
Let us remind Kulbergs what we wrote here, at the time when he was the only one who did not know that money was allocated to the bridge championship. https://t.co/Z7TrJenw0k
Interesting about that bridge championship - if the event is so good and valuable, why are the Riga City Council and also the government deciding about it at the last moment? And how did Parādnieks come up with announcing on the website before the official decisions that it is 'supported by the Ministry of Education and Science, Riga City Council, RTU'?
🇱🇻🇷🇴 Foreign Minister @Braze_Baiba participates in the opening of the Romanian Embassy in Latvia in Riga. This is a significant event in Latvia-Romania relations, whose history spans more than a century.
Already in May 1929, Romania opened its legation in Riga, which until June 1932 was headed by a chargé d'affaires, and then by a minister. From July 1939, the residence of the Romanian minister was in Helsinki.
The Romanian diplomatic representation is again in Riga, strengthening the close and friendly relations between the two countries. Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Romania were established on 2 June 1922 and renewed on 13 September 1991.
During the visit of Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coju to Latvia, special emphasis is also placed on the cultural connection – the National Library of Latvia will be gifted the first book in Romanian.
The historical connection between the two countries continues with a new phase of diplomatic cooperation 🇱🇻🤝🇷🇴

During the meeting B. Braže thanked Romania for its contribution to the protection of the Baltic states' airspace, participating for the fourth time this year in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. The Minister particularly appreciated the professional conduct of Romanian pilots on 19 May, when a Romanian F-16 neutralized an unmanned aerial vehicle that had entered Estonian airspace from Russian airspace.

The problem with AfD and Le Pen is that left-wing radicalism in these countries has created such great disgust that voters view migrants as a greater threat than Russia. In their thoughts they are far from Russia, and it does not worry them. Both are dangerous, only each from its own side - they have no pure national forces.
Dear @EspenBarthEide and @NorwayMFA , we are sending our heartfelt condolences from Latvia to the Royal Family and the Norwegian people on the passing of His Majesty King Harald V.
He served Norway with unwavering dedication and integrity. 🇳🇴 https://t.co/eFwB1clOUt
