❗️On the extension of EU sanctions and Latvia's position: 🔹EU sanctions must be strengthened, 🔹national sanctions have been adopted, 🔹reproaches must be addressed to those countries that wanted to remove 2 Russian oligarchs from sanctions, not to Latvia, which was the last of all EU countries to prevent that. https://t.co/nxliy4ZmvM

Foreign Minister @Braze_Baiba has consistently defended Latvia's position: sanctions against Russia must be strengthened, not weakened. Latvia does not support removing Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the EU sanctions list. In order not to jeopardise the extension of EU sanctions against the remaining approximately 3,000 individuals and organisations, Latvia abstained from the decision. Based on the draft decision prepared on the instructions of Baiba Braže, the Latvian government has already imposed national sanctions on Usmanov and Fridman - a travel ban and the freezing of funds located in Latvia.

Dear Andrii, we fully agree and that’s why we blocked the decision until the last moment possible. Latvia has already adopted national sanctions on two politically delisted individuals. https://t.co/u0MTm8gE9u

The decision to delist Usmanov and Fridman is shameful and unjustifiable. Moscow is celebrating because it got what it wanted: a sense of impunity, the humiliation of the EU, and division among Europeans. But there is still a way to spoil the celebrations in Moscow. I urge all EU member states to announce now that they will impose their own national sanctions on these two individuals.

Have you noticed that a record number of Western media outlets interview Latvia’s Foreign Minister @Braze_Baiba, and with striking regularity? I can’t recall any Latvian politician whom all these leading media have interviewed and asked for an opinion so much. Interesting. P.S. — this is not an election advertisement, but I can’t help saying it out loud. It’s too obvious. https://t.co/Rr40rWLVxz

@Lato_Lapsa This is not the first brutal arrest carried out by Zaņķis. Back then, Linards Grantiņš was arrested even more brutally.

“Until the very last moment in the negotiations I objected to the rape of my woman, that was a morally correct position, my friends saw and appreciated it, however I had to make a responsible decision, so in the end I abstained.” https://t.co/fqzisquQPi

Latvia agrees to a compromise, but does not change its principled position. We objected to the last minute against the removal of Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the EU sanctions list. Latvia was the only EU country that fought for this until the very end of the negotiations. It was a morally correct position, and our friends in Ukraine saw and appreciated it. However, the government had to make a responsible decision. The choice was not between a good and a bad solution. The choice was between changing the status of two individuals and the risk of losing the entire sanctions regime applying to more than 2,600 Russian war supporters, individuals and companies. Therefore, Latvia's representative will abstain in the vote. This will allow the sanctions to be extended not for the usual six months, but for 36 months. For the next three years, it will be much harder for the Kremlin and its allies to try to split Europe and trade over the future of sanctions every six months. At the same time, Latvia does not step back: 🔒 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with immediately preparing the legal basis for imposing national sanctions on Usmanov and Fridman; 💶 we will use all legal instruments to prevent the release of their funds and economic resources in Latvia; 🛡️ in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, we reached an agreement to start negotiations on Latvia's involvement in the French nuclear deterrence initiative; ✈️ France is ready to strengthen its military presence in Latvia, especially in the area of air defense; 🇺🇦 I personally informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian Prime Minister about Latvia's decision. Ukraine understands our position and supports the need to maintain a unified European sanctions regime. Latvia will not allow the sanctions regime against thousands of Russian war supporters to collapse because of two individuals. We maintained our political position, safeguarded the continuation of sanctions and at the same time achieved a significant strengthening of Latvia's security. As long as Russia continues the war, Latvia will continue to stand on Ukraine's side. Firmly and without retreat.

Latvia's PM, who vehemently opposed removing two Russian oligarchs from sanctions, told Euronews' @angelaskujins the move risks setting a "bad playbook" — saying sanctions are not a bargaining chip in politics. https://t.co/ynNQM1Dc8H

@Lato_Lapsa @Braze_Baiba The finale of today's Panorama with a “sudden” interview with the minister, who “knew nothing” about the coalition partners' criticism and, in true whataboutism style, mentioned the case of Dalbiņš being “beaten,” was excellent. Even the always composed anchor looked surprised by the sudden interview.
