Thinking and interested young people are one of Latvia's 🇱🇻 strongest values 💪 It was a genuine pleasure to host the students of Limbaži State Gymnasium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the visit, the young people got acquainted with the Ministry's work, the history of Latvian diplomacy, and the people whose work at various times has helped strengthen our country internationally. The meeting with Foreign Minister @Braze_Baiba and Parliamentary Secretary @dacemelbarde turned into an active discussion about international developments and Latvia's place in the world. The students were intrigued by the security situation in Europe, developments in the Middle East, Latvia's relations with partners, and questions of societal development. Thank you to the young people of Limbaži for their curiosity and thoughtful questions 💡

The European Commission President's annual State of the Union speech is somewhat of a ritual – one must address everyone and everything. Also this year: climate, migration, competitiveness, technology. I positively assess what was said about competitiveness and technological development. In artificial intelligence, Europe must focus more on industrial and manufacturing solutions, rather than trying to replicate the path of US and China's large language models. It is also good that the consensus on supporting Ukraine in institutions remains. However, overall I assess the speech quite critically. We heard little about the protection of the eastern border and investments. Initiatives to strengthen the border, including defense against drones, have already been voiced, but this time they were not among the main highlights of the speech. Also, the issue of Russia's frozen assets was not touched upon. For us in the Baltics, these are not secondary topics. They will need to be discussed.

🎾 The "Latvijas attīstībai" candidate for the Prime Minister's office and Member of the European Parliament Ivars @Ijabs believes that Latvia's biggest problem is not a lack of ideas, but the inability to make difficult decisions in time. In the interview, he reveals why Europe is an opportunity, not an obstacle, why Ukraine is also a Latvian security issue, and why without a strong economy it will not be possible to solve any other state problem. 👉 Read the full interview with Ivars Ijabs on our website: https://t.co/kV7hLHQIlx

@kr_klavins this is already an old practice - Novodvorska's interview also disappeared, when she visited the Saeima, before the language referendum, where she says what she thinks about Ušakovs

🟥 SCANDAL! DID YOU KNOW THAT RUSSIA'S STATE AGENCY IS DEMANDING MORE THAN 260 MILLION EUROS FROM airBaltic IN COURT?! The Russian Deposit Insurance Agency, managing the bankrupt Investbank, wants to recover more than 260.8 million euros from Latvia's national airline. This was reported by InvestFuture on 11 August, citing RIA Novosti. The government, airBaltic management, and the President have a question: what did you know about this claim, and why were Saeima deputies and the public not informed about this debt recovery? FACT CHRONOLOGY: ▪️ 11 August 2026. InvestFuture reports on a claim exceeding 260.8 million euros. A Moscow court has postponed the case to October following airBaltic's request for time to submit additional evidence, including Latvian court rulings. ▪️ Q1 2026 report. airBaltic itself cites a claim of 203.15 million euros: 16.5 million euros in principal, plus default and penalty interest. The company, citing its lawyers, assesses the claim's chances as very limited. ▪️ 5 March 2024. According to airBaltic's report, proceedings in the new claim case were suspended; the hearing was later postponed several times. ▪️ 2023. The Russian agency filed a new claim to recover credit debts directly from airBaltic. ▪️ 2019. The agency asked to declare loan and guarantee agreements invalid. Its argument: loans to BAS actually served to finance airBaltic. ▪️ 2017. Latvia received a request for legal assistance from Moscow. LSM reported on a claim exceeding 20 million euros. Latvian authorities had to assess the enforceability of judgments. ▪️ 16 August 2013. In one of the initial cases, a Moscow court upheld Investbank's claim against airBaltic for 11.1 million euros. ▪️ March 2012. Litigation began over three BAS loans. The bank demanded 18.4 million euros, considering airBaltic as guarantor. ▪️ 2011. Investbank issued loans to the then airBaltic shareholder Baltijas Aviācijas Sistēmas. The bank considered airBaltic as guarantor, but the airline later disputed the existence of guarantees in court. WHY did the prime minister and ministers not also inform Saeima deputies about this Russian litigation and its possible consequences when deciding on the allocation of funding to airBaltic?

DO POLITICIANS KEEP PROMISES? On April 1 of this year, a pre-election discussion organized by the financial technology sectors took place, in which several coalition politicians called the increase of the capital gains tax rate to 25.5% an urgent error to fix, which strongly hampers investments and 🇱🇻 capital market growth. @Apvienotais_ (@AivaViksna), @VL_TBLNNK (G.Eglītis), @Jauna_Vienotiba (J.Patmalnieks), @LatvijaPirmaja (K.Krištopans) promised to reduce this rate to 15% or “abolish it altogether” (see from 57 minutes 41 seconds). Politicians can fulfill their promises in 2 ways: 1) There are at least two openings of the Personal Income Tax (PIT) in the Saeima, and an amendment before the second reading is very easy to make. 2) Put a reduction of the capital gains tax to 15% (or lower) into the 2027 budget package and vote on it by the end of the year. Interestingly, even the “co-author” of this tax increase, @aseradens, has admitted in several public discussions (e.g., the September 2025 “Virziens” and the recent pre-election debate at Start-up House) that increasing the rate to 25.5% was a mistake that should be corrected. https://t.co/XLg4YOBaPw

⛽ The rise in fuel prices is already affecting both people's wallets and companies' costs – so an action plan must be ready before the situation becomes even more severe. In August, the price of diesel increased by 11.5% in a month, and by 24.5% in a year. The increase in fuel prices raises transport and logistics costs and may further be reflected in the prices of goods and services. New Unity calls on the government to prepare concrete scenarios now, so that in the event of further rapid price increases, it would be possible to act quickly and in a targeted manner. 💬 @aseradens: "We must not wait until the rise in fuel prices is fully reflected in the price level across the entire economy." In our view, the solution must be targeted, fiscally proportionate, and quickly implementable – to mitigate the price shock for both families and Latvian companies.

⚠️ TWO MOTHERS IN A CHILD'S DOCUMENTS? WHERE DO THE CONSERVATIVE VALUES PROMISED BY THE UNITED LIST AND THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE GO?! We, LATVIA FIRST, proposed to examine this issue in the Saeima so that each deputy could show by his vote which values and which family model he stands for - for mother and father or for the legal recognition of two mothers in child documents. However, the inclusion of the issue on the agenda was not supported. See the voting table. WHY did AS and NA not support the examination of the issue? How does that align with your promises to defend traditional and Christian family values? I was especially asked to draw attention to the deputy chairwoman of the Saeima, Christian Linda Matisone from the United List. WHY did you leave the hall before this vote and return after it? If so, what was the reason? What is your position on the legal recognition of two mothers? REFERENCE: Currently, a case has been initiated in the Constitutional Court in which it is requested that the partner of a child's biological mother also be registered as the mother in the child's birth register. So the question is about the legal recognition of two mothers in child documents. The Constitutional Court has called on the Saeima and the Cabinet of Ministers to submit their legally reasoned response.
