From@Ivars_AbolinsThe project 'Cultural Diversity Festival as a promoter of co-creation and integration' worth €99,954 by the association 'I Want to Help Refugees' has been halted and will not be started. The decision was made because a visible representative of the association has been accused in a criminal process related to supporting the illegal crossing of Latvia's border. When the court decision takes effect, the Ministry of Culture will decide on further action. Before the association begins to spend taxpayers' money, it must be clarified whether Ieva Raubiško has committed the heinous crime for which she has already been convicted in the first instance. The contract concluded during the time of former culture minister Agnese Lāce (Progressive) stipulates that 'I Want to Help Refugees' for €99,954 will 'promote the integration of third-country nationals into Latvian society through art and cultural activities, covering various migration stages taking place in Latvia's territory'. It will 'create an inclusive environment and cooperation between third-country nationals and local society, using art and cultural activities as a tool for co-creation and dialogue, resulting in a cultural diversity festival.' Before becoming culture minister, Agnese Lāce was a board member of 'I Want to Help Refugees'.

From@RaivisZeltitsIn the context of the Saeima elections, “Austošā Saule Latvijai” receives various invitations to discussions and events together with representatives of other parties. Already in two cases we have refused to participate in formats whose idea is to “friendlily and positively” philosophize or unite with representatives of other parties, to express supportive thoughts to any opponent and to show that “we are only human”. The idea that we can philosophize or unite with representatives of the Sovereign Power, Rosļikova or the Progressive party seems absurd to us. Politics is for us neither philosophizing, nor a game, nor theater, where in the evening everyone insults each other, but in the morning cooperates in common coalitions, as is customary in Latvia. For us, politics is a struggle for the Latvian national idea, which inevitably excludes ideas that harm ours, and also creates real adversaries. And there are people we would rather see in a courtroom than in the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia, not to mention “uniting”. For family, nation and state! FOR THE REVIVAL OF A LATVIAN LATVIA!

@irlarionovs What is a Russian-speaker? I only know a Russian. Russian-speaker is a term invented by the Kremlin, as well as flags that were waving.
From@irlarionovs@lindberga22 Okay, some Russian-speaker made a poster.. big problem. And why can't one stand up for Palestine's right to self-determination?

From@janisdombravaSome marginal groups support mass immigration, because for them the the nation and its long-term existence mean nothing. The majority of the Latvian people do not want us to be replaced by immigrants.

@ieva_jakobs The Criminal Law sections have longer names. Usually 'hate crimes' refer to the crimes provided for in Sections 78 and 150 of the Criminal Law. https://t.co/p4ElKJFOhh
From@ieva_jakobs@AndrejsJudins And what is a 'hate crime'?
Open referenced post
@JanisRonis The Criminal Law provides for liability for the illegal movement of people across the state border and providing them with the opportunity to stay illegally in Latvia (CL 285, 285.1, 285.2). There are both criminal proceedings and convictions.
From@JanisRonis@AndrejsJudins And why aren't those who import those hostile illegals here held accountable?
Open referenced post
@DzelzsCilveks That is why, in my opinion, for specific actions that may be recognized as criminal under Article 78 or 150 of the Criminal Law, one must first report to @Valsts_drosiba. Of course, one can also talk about such things on social media, but that should not become an end in itself.
From@DzelzsCilveks@AndrejsJudins So currently, hate crimes, racism, and I don't know what else every NA and AS movement is called, and this is done mainly by PRO, so the concept of hate speech is being devalued. Because most of the events or publications they name are not hate speech.

From@janisdombravaAttention❗️ I urge Latvian residents to abandon plans to travel to Belarus or to return if you are there. In the conditions of Belarus's expanded migration hybrid war, safe movement between countries may become difficult. Additionally. Estonia is a friend of Latvia. I inform that after our meeting last week with Estonia's Minister of the Interior I. Taro, he has informed me that Estonia is sending additional border guards to strengthen Latvia's external border.

From@partijaMMNJānis Hermanis on what Latvia is doing wrong. MMN's goal is to address the causes of the state's stagnation, not the consequences. One of Latvia's most pronounced problems is the declining economy, the basis of which is the large presence of the state everywhere. The current economy is an excessive luxury. https://t.co/JgT93ehILj

Pleasant to see that L. Langa devotes her time to explaining to her followers on social networks the conclusion of Latvian and European human rights jurisprudence, which emphasizes that freedom of speech is not absolute. https://t.co/RYIWCWk1Ks
From@liana_langaFreedom of speech is not absolute, because it is always balanced against other human rights, societal interests, and practical necessities. If it were absolute, it would become a tool that destroys freedom itself and societal stability. At the same time, excessive restriction (for example, 'safe space' culture or 'deplatforming' for inconvenient views) threatens the very core of freedom. In short: freedom of speech is fundamental, but not absolute. Freedom of speech is not absolute, because it is always balanced against other human rights, societal interests, and practical necessities. If it were absolute, it would become a tool that destroys freedom itself and societal stability. Main reasons: Freedom of speech can cause real harm to other people. The classic example from Oliver Wendell Holmes (U.S. Supreme Court, 1919): 'The freedom to shout fire in a crowded theater is not protected if there is no fire.' Such speech creates panic and physical danger. Similarly unprotected are: Direct incitement to violence (incitement to imminent lawless action). Threats (true threats). Defamation (lying that damages a person's reputation – libel/slander). False testimony in court (perjury). Other people's fundamental rights: Freedom of speech clashes with: Privacy rights and reputation protection. Principles of equality and dignity (for example, hate speech that systematically demeans entire groups and promotes discrimination). Protection of children (child pornography, grooming, etc. is not 'freedom of speech'). Public order and security: In some countries (including Latvia and the EU), there are restrictions against speech that threatens: National security (disclosure of state secrets). Public peace (incitement to riots or terrorism). In Latvia, Article 100 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but it is not absolute – it is limited by Article 116 of the Constitution (rights to honor, health, other people's rights, the democratic system, etc.). Practical and philosophical limits: John Stuart Mill ('On Liberty', 1859) defended a very broad freedom of speech, but he also recognized the 'harm principle' – speech that directly harms others can be restricted. Absolute freedom would lead to a 'tyranny of the majority' or a dictatorship of the strongest voices, where minorities or the weakly protected are oppressed without any consequences. Differences between countries: The USA – closest to absolute freedom (1st Amendment). Even hate speech and Nazi demonstrations are protected (Skokie case, 1977), if there are no direct threats. Europe and Latvia – more balance. Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights allows restrictions that are 'necessary in a democratic society' (hate speech, Holocaust denial in some countries, glorification of terrorism, etc.). Authoritarian regimes – often hide censorship behind 'public order'.

From@Duksis6@AndrejsJudins You can speculate with the term hate crime, but you can also argue about freedom of expression! Right!?
