After A.Kulbergs' public statement that NGO representatives are paid for participation in the Cabinet of Ministers and NGO cooperation memorandum meeting (61 eur per meeting; held once a month), social networks also heated up. But what is currently missing from the public discussion on reducing state expenditures? First, leadership - before taking from others, one must start with oneself. The government must first give up its monthly representation expenses (1731 eur for the prime minister; 1534 eur for a minister; credited to the account each month, no need to account for them), reduce salaries for parliamentary secretaries (currently 6804 eur), reduce the volume of business trips, etc. Second, there is a lack of a systemic approach in assessing the usefulness of state and municipal grants to associations in relation to their activities. We spend enormous energy discussing trifles, but we do not address the fundamental problems related to NGO operations and their financing. For reference. Total revenues of associations and foundations (2024 data) are 699 million eur, but 24.3% (169.8 million eur) consist of grants and subsidies. The largest grant allocations are for recreation, culture and religion – 34.10 million eur, education 23.59 million eur. 22,184 persons are employed, and as the only workplace, an association or foundation is for 8,193 persons (36.9% of all employed). What they do: 20% housing management, 17% sports and sports support, 10% culture and art, 13% civil society field (charity, territorial, community and neighborhood development, youth work, democracy and civil society, protection of human rights and individual rights, promotion of volunteering).

I will be interested to see the 'full analysis of state funding to NGOs' - especially regarding the funding that the Ministry of Agriculture allocates to various organizations every year to accomplish the same tasks. Some examples from the Forest Development Fund: -> 1/ https://t.co/eeUETcJYjj

I have informed that last week I participated in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers Memorandum Council with NGOs (non-governmental organizations), the Civic Union and other organizations. After the meeting, I learned that the State Chancellery pays participants a remuneration for attending each such meeting (below I attach the information provided to me by the State Chancellery). Yes, exactly for attending the meeting – not for performing specific work or fulfilling a state task, but for participation itself. It should be noted that these same NGOs receive funding from the state budget through SIF programs, as well as from various European Union funds. In such a case, it is no longer correct to call such organizations NGOs. Rather, they should be called GOs – state organizations, or in fact state agencies. I fully support genuine non-governmental organizations that can perform certain functions on behalf of the state much more effectively than the state itself could. However, I find it completely unacceptable that taxpayers' money is used to pay for NGO representatives to attend meetings. Similarly, the overall usefulness of funding many NGOs must also be assessed. Therefore, I have instructed the State Chancellery to prepare a full analysis of state funding to NGOs. Enough of wasting state money ineffectively! After my speech at the LAMPA festival, one of the main representatives of the Civic Union, @AndrisGobins, called me 'to talk', trying to convince me how normal and even obligatory it is to pay NGOs for attending meetings. Our views completely diverged, and Mr. Gobiņš was clearly outraged. In my opinion, NGOs can only be called non-governmental if they are truly independent – without financial dependence on the state, without conflicts of interest, and with a clear goal of defending the interests of their members. A good example is Twitterconvojs – an organization that, without any state funding, has delivered more than 3,000 cars, donations, equipment and other aid to Ukraine, helped solve several important state tasks, and has never asked for money either for attending meetings or for its work. That is what a real non-governmental organization and true civil society look like. What are your thoughts? Comments? Do you agree or disagree?

And I invite you to examine the experience of Georgia and Urbans, where they also went down this same dangerous path and in the end the biggest victim is society itself.

For the record, Aivis: in 2012 Putin started with the 'foreign agents' law against NGOs. Then followed the dismantling of independent civil society. Everyone draws their own parallels.

@MStakis @Progresivie @janisdombrava Steven Seagal was also a beloved martial arts actor who left an indelible positive mark on the film industry. Today he is a cog in the Russian propaganda machine. And what else is a cog in the hybrid war, Mārtiņ? That's just it, parallels… 🤝

In Lampa, all prime minister candidates were reportedly strictly required to give an answer about their attitude toward the Istanbul Convention. Some (National Alliance) reportedly stammered, others (Kulbergs) did a pirouette and now confirm support for Istanbul after all. Since I was not there, I do not want to avoid the question and will answer here. Personally, I am against it. For a nation whose demographic death sentence has effectively already been signed in heaven, it would be logical to change its priorities. When you see a painted rainbow, what associations come to mind? Well, mine too. And when I hear SK, I do not think about women's safety, but something quite different. It is quite obvious to me that the organizations campaigning for Istanbul are exactly the same organizations that most fervently push for accepting refugees. So it is clear that our women's safety is of no concern to them; they have another plan in mind. I have 3 daughters, and that is why I am against the Istanbul Convention. “We Change the Rules” will give each person the individual freedom to choose their own answer on SK. At the current moment, this is not the most critical issue for Latvia. About 118th in importance on the MMN list.

@AlvisHermanis1 Kulbergs is FOR the Istanbul Convention. Are you too?

I read Kulbergs's interview in Diena, where he advertises the “Mēs mainām noteikumus” party program. You can see that he has learned many sentences by heart. That pleases me. For example, the sentence that health institutions should be funded not by the number of procedures but by treatment outcomes is MMN's main proposal for fixing this sector. Because queues in medical institutions are a problem only because it is beneficial for them to send you to as many offices as possible. So, Kulbergs is a good guy for helping advertise the MMN plan. Thanks to him. Maybe someday there will also be someone whose balls will allow it to be implemented.

The National Alliance party 'All for Latvia!'-'For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK' apparently is in those partner organization relations you mentioned, because members from NA were seen in large numbers at the festival 'Lampa' - Indriksone, Grasbergs and other NA politicians. https://t.co/xQvVzGj0CT

Really @MarisKucinskis won't provide a summary of how many and which state institutions have paid for the festival @FestivalsLAMPA organized by the Soros fund and the Eberhard fund, partner organization of the Vienotība party? #budget https://t.co/Yf0byvQP0H

@AlvisHermanis1 The Istanbul Convention is by nature recommendatory. It is not a law. It was simply used as a political protein before the elections. That is clear to everyone, I assume. In our party, quite a few can show a 3+ family card, including Kulbergs and me.

@CerinsAivis Yesterday in Lampa your party's boss Kulbergs affirmed loyalty to the Istanbul Convention. That is the right signal for demographic support. Because traditional families are our enemy.

@AlvisHermanis1 Alvi, I agree with you that demographics is a catastrophe. Rule change can also be called a change of priorities. Tangible funding goes to NGOs whose goals are to promote birth rates, not to associations that drag in a bunch of illegal immigrants.

Elviss Strazdiņš urges not to get carried away with dependence on US companies' products and services. “If Trump imposes a fee on software, we would go bankrupt.” He urges to seek alternatives and diversify procurement.

The mention of Andris Kulbergs in the 'United List' program suggests that the 'United List' currently considers him its main trump card, assesses Māris Antonevičs, head of the politics department of 'Latvijas Avīze'.

“Everyone is pushing defense because they know it can win votes,” cybersecurity researcher Elviss Strazdiņš concluded after reading the programmes for the 15th Saeima elections. He hopes, however, that the commitment to 5% of GDP for defense will be fulfilled.

🇱🇻 There are people who don’t talk about love for Latvia — they do it! Inese Zagorska is one of them. So don’t fall for inaccurate information. A simple human error occurred while filling in the candidate questionnaire at the CEC. She has never cooperated with the USSR, the Latvian SSR, or foreign state security, intelligence, or counterintelligence services. We have already approached the CEC to correct this error. We have also asked the media to correct what was published. Rest assured, there are no such people in our United List team, but there are convinced Latvian patriots! 🇱🇻 You should know important facts about Inese: a pianist who in 2011 created the “White Grand Piano” in Sigulda — one of the first professional art concert halls outside Riga. Artistic director and board member of the Cēsis Concert Hall, chairwoman of the board of the Latvian National Music Council. A person thanks to whom professional art in all its forms is available not only in the capital but also in Vidzeme. She herself puts it simply: “Why have we built concert halls all over Latvia? Why are they filled with listeners? That proves our people’s deep intelligence, understanding of culture, and love of music and art. It is a strong foundation for great things, for a wise and Latvian future.” Inese has proven that Latvia does not end at the Riga border. Now she is ready to carry this conviction into the Saeima — on the United List team in Vidzeme. I am proud that she is on our team. On 3 October Vidzeme will have something to vote for. 🇱🇻 #ApvienotaisSaraksts #Vidzeme #Saeima2026
