Do you know what's with that 'through'?
I remember the 90s. Money and savings evaporated. Track suits and dermantin sneakers cost a month's salary. Fuel wasn't without queues, and it also cost a lot.
So what? And nothing, we survived. There are just too many sour-faced people in heads now. Price fluctuates, oh and woe and me and pity. Save me, I'm fainting!
We need to stop politically soothing those sourpusses. That's all.

There is definitely no such plan. The prospect of raising VAT looms only for 2029 or 2030, if the Saeima remains as stupid as it is now.
I don't see it as a solution, rather a capitulation. That's why I don't consider it. Why? Because you can raise it, but can you collect it? Estonia's experience is not exactly good.
For them, it has gone sideways for all time. Debt is growing rapidly (though from a low level). They went into absurd politics there. They promised and cut taxes here and there, but significantly increased spending on defense, similar to us. And such an approach is a trap: the deficit increases, debts grow rapidly.
@guntarsv Unfortunately, I don't see how expenditures can be cut that way; it's hard to take away what has already been given, so there will be a VAT increase after the elections, because they can shift the blame onto the current idi*ts.

To avoid raising taxes, it is necessary to limit the growth of expenditures.
They don't promise that, because everyone wants the sharing of money (the opposite). This very example with the very popular 'let's promise a drop in fuel prices' is right from that chest.
Here the question is not about 'what' to wish for, but let's look in the mirror: what kind of politics do we endlessly want? Each for their own pocket. But that cannot, even theoretically, end tax increases and the path toward financial catastrophe🤷🏼♀️🤡
@guntarsv The best part is that we'll have to vote in the same crabs, because there is no one to vote for; in Latvia politicians are apparently either schemers or those who aren't needed anywhere else, and one of the first decisions will be raising VAT, because the previous ones (themselves) were suckers. The question is just 22 or 23?

@EduardsBeinerts@UldisVarnevichs@Apvienotais_ Please send fresher epithets about me. Over these years I have written five A4 pages. Now I want to fill the sixth.
There's not enough for the Dainu cabinet yet 😤🤷🏻♂️
@guntarsv@UldisVarnevichs ... and if there weren't such a France, what would you 'analyze'? , 'blin', do you have a 'contract' ('love') with @Apvienotais_ for life, or only until October 4, 2026?

The EU already expanded as it was. The rich countries initially absorbed labor from newcomers, including us. That reserve ran out, then migrants from third countries came.
For a long time they didn't consider it a problem in Germany, with 83 million, some million more each year. But this isn't eternal either; at a certain critical mass, social and cultural problems begin. They missed that.
And now there is hostile bitterness from all sides. They helplessly bark at each other. There is no solution. Merkel is right, and the opponents are right.
@IvarsAuzins I resist fatalism (in thought). I believe that restructuring is possible, emphasizing local (European) labor, as was intended in the original EU project. But I am also well aware that my opinion is in the minority.
BREAKING: President Trump says the US has entered an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that gives the US “permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland.”

Go ahead and comment. How can barely funded schools, which spread the funding so that everyone gets less on average, ensure the main thing - the quality of education?
Our state spends more on education as a share of GDP on average than developed countries (OECD). There is nowhere more. For this reason, municipal spending is also higher than the OECD average. Nowhere further either.
Just don't put here the tired traditional slogans about noble intentions. I know them all (on two A4 pages).
@guntarsv I won't comment on schools this time, because he who does not want to be enlightened will not become so, and nothing can be done with Guntar there. As for everything else - well, we ourselves vote for such people. What can we do if we don't love ourselves?

In Germany, government ratings are so catastrophic (especially for Merz), AfD's dramatic rise is so decisive that the government has punched another hole in an empty wallet and is trying to reduce fuel prices. Completely pointless. When fuel prices from 1.5 euros rapidly race above 2, and even 3 is not fantasy, this will do nothing. But the ordinary voter likes it. Reason is a museum-worthy thing.
From 1 October to the end of the year, Germany plans to reduce the excise tax on petrol and diesel by 14 cents/l. Together with VAT, that would be about 17 cents/l. The German government also plans talks with the oil industry to introduce fuel price caps by no later than 1 January 2027, following the Belgian or Luxembourg model – the state sets a maximum selling price that is adjusted according to oil prices and costs.

France has been in a destructive spiral of public debt for many years. Politicians fail to maintain fiscal discipline, the rating is gradually downgraded, the interest rate on debt increases, the debt itself grows. France is currently the biggest time bomb in the EU that threatens to trigger the next financial crisis. If it doesn't go off outside the EU first.
As elections come, they promise again, because how can one not promise while the can is rolling and rattling down the mountain.
By the way, we have a similar situation. All 4 years of the next Saeima are red, in deficit. Not only have promises been made, but a series of decisions have been made to allocate funds without coverage (hundreds of millions every year until Doomsday). Practically all are heartbreakingly good intentions, how can you object to them? For example, small schools with 3 children per class. Meanwhile, the appetite does not subside. For the elections, parties energetically throw in the next good intentions as if they were tires for the Midsummer bonfire.
Hang in there ✊
#France keeps sliding down the credit ladder. Scope cuts its rating to A+ from AA-, while DBRS turns negative on its AA outlook. The 10y yield premium over Germany tops 100bps for the first time in 14 years. Political paralysis is getting expensive. (via BBG) https://t.co/sdbiwkqgIg

I will gladly do it when I can. Meanwhile, you can ask your ex-minister about these 'strange' decisions and promises. About 3 lost years that were lost to national defense... I am at a loss for words... 🇺🇦 gives us the most precious = time to prepare, but you with your PRO 'politics' wasted it... why???, I still cannot understand
Kulbergs and Melnis must provide more detailed explanations for the decision not to buy the Swedish Archer system after all.\n\nThis is artillery tested in Ukraine.\n\nSweden is our closest ally. Hundreds of Swedish soldiers guard Latvia.\n\nThis is how Sweden's defense minister comments on Latvia's decision: https://t.co/AMP2NO1xNw
Mr. Kulbergs, Ryanair is not a folk singer singing an anthem about 'long-term commitments'; it's a company, and a company, unlike the prime minister, calculates. Planes fly where fees are lower. That's not a paradox; that's the only regularity capital has at all. Capital is not married to Latvia; it is free. You want 'reliable connectivity'. Ryanair promises cheap tickets, and it leaves if the tax threshold rises again. Not understanding this means not understanding why Latvia is getting smaller but the state is getting bigger.

I am watching how convincingly Šlesers tells how he will now form a two-party coalition together with the United List. As far as I know, AS has a completely different opinion…

That is exactly what the fund will provide. You can only go for cheap long-term money (international pension funds) if you consolidate under one umbrella = funds don't look at low-value assets (our biggest company is pocket change to them). Running a beauty contest for each company individually would be very expensive and complicated. For one fund it's much easier and automatically good, professional management will be provided for all companies + any citizen will be able to buy shares in the entire fund, not in an individual company.
Centralized management of state-owned companies - very good idea. Listing shares of the 'Development Fund' on the stock exchange - bad idea. Shares of individual companies should be listed: better management, transparently determinable value. https://t.co/P3yVf3EzLq

🔴Transparency in procurement from the first euro. 🔴Supervision of non-bank lenders will now be under @LatvijasBanka. This week, significant work has been successfully completed to help organize our country's economy and create a more transparent environment.

@guntars_h@Apvienotais_ It must be understood that Ukrainian info also needs to be divided by 2, because any method of raising issues more sharply than they are is beneficial to them, since they lack military support, Western societies get tired, but the war continues and becomes more expensive.
🇱🇻 I see that the public is anxious while following international news.
I want to reassure - there is no reason for panic!! We take the security situation seriously.
🇵🇱 The Polish Prime Minister has published an intelligence risk assessment on possible Russian actions in the coming months. However, it is not a statement about a specific or imminent attack on Poland, Latvia, or any other NATO country.
📢 You know that I communicate openly, also about negative facts. But right now there is no reason for concern.
🤝 I am in constant contact with the services. This week I also met with EU leaders who attended the Arctic Summit.
✅ Currently there is no information indicating a particularly high level of threat. I can confirm that Russia is not ready for war and is not capable of a conventional attack.
🛡️ NATO support is stronger than ever. Our border guard and services are vigilant – a number of operations are underway on the border, military exercises are taking place, and German fighters will additionally patrol the airspace during elections. However, we must remain vigilant.
Our society is well informed about threats and knows our eastern neighbor well. Of course, the Russian election context intensifies the volume of disinformation and propaganda.
🔍 I am carefully following the situation, meeting with the services, and speaking with both Ukrainian and EU leaders. The responsible services constantly monitor the situation and exchange information with our allies.
I can reassure you! If a real threat arises, I will inform you immediately.

We really hope that the current situation is exactly that. But as soon as I opened LETA (Published: 18.09.2026 14:50), there it was: "Latvia's president warns of a very possible further escalation in Russia's aggression" · https://t.co/rhfE9t6XmB
How/what to think now - how serious is everything (really)? I don't want to sow panic, but a quote from the film "Conspiracy Theory": "If the government tells you everything is perfectly fine, it means it's time to run!"
