No funds are being invested there at the moment; there is actually a regrouping of almost worthless claims (bonds, loan). That money evaporated long ago, and those who decided to lend and invest on the principle that there is money like never before smoked it away. So there is no dilemma about where it is better to 'invest'. But there was an alternative. Doing nothing, agreeing to regroup nothing, sitting and moping, then there would be no chance of getting the external financing that is now needed. And everything would have ended already. Now at least there are prospects, the realisation of which I cannot predict, because that is not decided by us. Other people, big-money operators. To be or not to be.

@AndrisKulbergs repeats the old mantra: allowing the company to cease operations “would not be responsible,” because airBaltic “connects Latvia with the world” and is “a vital part of the economy.” Here is the classic mistake of confusing a specific company with a function. Connectivity is provided by the airport, demand, and competition, not by the existence of a single company with negative equity and expensive bonds. If airBaltic ceased to exist tomorrow, the slots and passengers would not disappear; others would take them. Bastiat already explained a century and a half ago: the visible is the existing flights, the invisible is everything that the same resources invested in airBaltic would have created elsewhere, right, Mr. @guntarsv?

🚨 CSDD CYBERATTACK — NEGLIGENCE WITH REAL CONSEQUENCES FOR STATE SECURITY — Today about the @CSDD_LV cyberattack, its consequences, and what must be done now. The CSDD board and council have been dismissed. Temporary management will be appointed instead, while competitions for the permanent board and council are started immediately. 🔴 WHAT HAPPENED? ➖️ On August 8 at about 3:00 AM, from Friday to Saturday, an attacker broke into the CSDD system. ➖️ The breach occurred through the CSDD MEDICAL platform, which about 200 doctors use to enter medical certificates for vehicle drivers. ➖️ The attacker operated undisturbed through the system on Saturday and Sunday. ➖️ On Sunday evening, a large-scale data download occurred. ➖️ CSDD only learned of the suspicious activity on Monday. ➖️ On Wednesday, it was established that data theft had occurred. ➖️ The Prime Minister was only informed on Wednesday at 5:00 PM. ❗ HOW WAS THIS POSSIBLE AT ALL? CSDD should have had secure multi-factor authentication. But CSDD MEDICAL access was possible only with a regular username and password. CSDD had every opportunity to implement top-level cybersecurity: 💶 there were financial resources; 💻 there was IT capacity; 🧠 there were knowledge and specialists. Yet self-assurance, negligence, and arrogance toward cybersecurity risks have led to one of the most serious data leaks in state possession. It threatens not only people's privacy but also the security of citizens, businesses, and the state. 📂 WHAT DATA HAS LEAKED? A very large volume of data is concerned: ➖️ data of approximately 1.3 million private individuals; ➖️ data of approximately 200,000 companies; ➖️ payment information for the period from 2008 to 2026; ➖️ first name, surname, or company name; ➖️ personal code or company registration number; ➖️ declared address; ➖️ vehicle state registration number. I do not understand why CSDD needed to store payment data since 2008 on its servers at all, if the regulatory acts do not require such storage. 🛡️ WARNINGS WERE THERE. THEY WERE NOT USED. CSDD had a contract with TET for server and connection cybersecurity, but not for the protection of CSDD's own application and software. Moreover. https://t.co/Y2dCsXsES5 had already offered from January to April 2026 to install its sensors that automatically identify suspicious anomalies in the network. The CERT measure is free. CSDD refused it. ⚖️ A submission has been filed with the prosecutor's office for possible negligence or wrongdoing. Law enforcement authorities must now establish the responsibility of each official. ✅ WHAT DO WE DO NEXT? I have issued a Prime Minister's resolution with 12 specific tasks for ministries and state institutions. Key ones: ➖️ CSDD must inform every affected person and company, indicating what specific data has leaked. ➖️ https://t.co/Y2dCsXsES5 sensors must be mandatorily installed in all critically important state systems so that anomalies are identified in a timely manner, not several days after the breach. ➖️ All critical infrastructure and sensitive data institutions must carry out full-scale intrusion simulations, i.e., penetration tests, to really test system resilience and find weaknesses before an attacker does. ➖️ Instructed to assess the possibility of restricting the freely accessible e-CSDD vehicle number plate check tool. ➖️ Instructed to assess how quickly state systems can abandon the use of the personal code as a username, moving to a more secure identification solution. ➖️ https://t.co/Y2dCsXsES5 has submitted a list of other state institutions that similarly refused the proposed cybersecurity measures. Next week we will go through this list. And the questions will be unpleasant. ⚠️ A MUCH GREATER STATE SECURITY RISK — declarations of officials. Individually, this data is already sensitive. But in combination with other publicly available state databases, it becomes a very effective profiling tool. The declaration information of officials in the VID system is currently freely viewable without user identification. In the era of artificial intelligence, the collection, structuring, and linking of huge amounts of data takes not months, but minutes. This means that such data can be systematically collected and regularly updated also by the services of Russia, Belarus, North Korea, or other countries. By combining CSDD's stolen data with publicly available declarations and other databases, it is possible to profile: 👮 police officers; 🪖 soldiers; 🛂 border guards; 🕵️ security service employees; 🏛️ officials and their families. This is already a national security issue. Declarations must remain accessible to the public, but I see no justification for them being mass-copied anonymously. The solution can be very simple — the information remains public, but access is after authentication, for example, with one's profile at https://t.co/2abj1S4l9U. 🌲 AND I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN THE @valstsmezi CYBERATTACK. From the Minister of Agriculture @ArmandsKrauze I expect a concrete answer: who in Latvian State Forests was responsible for the systematic failure to update server software, which allowed the attacker to exploit vulnerabilities? Next week I want on the table: ➖️ the name and surname of the responsible official; ➖️ an explanation of how this was allowed; ➖️ information on what consequences and responsibility will follow. 🇱🇻 WE DO NOT LIVE IN A PEACETIME DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT. Latvia lives under constant hybrid threat conditions. Next to us are aggressor states that use all possible methods against our country. At the same time, artificial intelligence has made the preparation, automation, and data processing of cyberattacks much easier. Therefore, the attitude — “surely nothing will happen to us” — is no longer acceptable in public administration. Cybersecurity is not a technical matter for the IT department. It is state security. ❓ AND I ALSO HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NCC NATIONAL CYBERSECURITY CENTRE. I am interested in how it can be that the National Cybersecurity Centre, which had about 20 million euros in 2025 and about 28 million euros in 2026, has not been able to achieve significantly higher resilience of state systems against such attacks? That is very serious funding. About half of the public television and radio media budget. With such funding, there must also be a measurable result: ✅ how many institutions have actually been tested; ✅ how many vulnerabilities have been eliminated; ✅ in how many systems multi-factor authentication has been introduced; ✅ in how many institutions have https://t.co/Y2dCsXsES5 sensors been installed; ✅ how many real cyberattack simulation tests have been conducted; ✅ and who is responsible if known risks remain unaddressed for years. I have questions. And I expect very concrete answers. Cybersecurity cannot be fixed with presentations, strategies, and reports.

@ESvirskis We have a Minister of Justice to whom this question should start being addressed @EdvardsSmiltens. Otherwise I'll become the problem dispatcher here.

Question to Andris Kulbergs @AndrisKulbergs: why don't we want to overhaul external oversight of the justice system along the Finnish model? Does Latvia have such a unique legal system that the principle of an independent Chancellor of Justice, which works in Finland, cannot even be seriously considered here? Or is the problem much simpler - the justice system itself has no interest in independent external control, while the rest of the public administration finds it convenient to keep a model where institutions largely audit themselves? If we publicly talk about the need to overhaul the justice system, then it is time to say exactly how we will do it.

Having looked into the bus station sale story, I can't shake the feeling of déjà vu that something similar has been seen before. I wouldn't be surprised if people linked to Šķēle emerge there in the future, because that café owner really doesn't look like a serious developer…

❓ What is actually being decided today about “airBaltic”? Most important - Saeima today is not deciding on granting new money to “airBaltic”. Today's decision is about whether the state will retain the opportunity to participate in negotiations with “airBaltic” creditors and defend Latvia's interests in the company's restructuring process. The situation is not simple. “airBaltic” has accumulated large debts, and the previously raised expensive bonds have placed a heavy financial burden on the company. Continuing to simply invest taxpayer money is not a solution. But allowing the company to cease operations would also be irresponsible. “airBaltic” connects Latvia with the world, provides jobs, and is an essential part of our economy. Therefore, an opportunity is currently being given to try to sort out the company. For the first time, there is a concrete plan - reduce the debt burden, sort out the company's operations and finances, and then attract a strategic investor. The state cannot and must not in the long term alone maintain the airline. ❗ So what does Saeima decide today? - defer the state's due 18 million euro loan payment; - give the opportunity to restructure existing state claims; - allow the state to participate in bondholder negotiations and be at the table where the future of “airBaltic” is decided. This is not a decision to grant “airBaltic” another 30 million euros. If a specific state financial investment is needed in the future, it will have to be decided separately. The choice now is harsh - do nothing and risk the end of “airBaltic” operations, or use the last opportunity to sort out the company while defending taxpayer interests. The goal is clear - an “airBaltic” that can fly and earn without regular state money injections, and a strategic investor that, together with the state, takes responsibility for the company's future. Latvia needs good connectivity with the world. But Latvian residents should not have to endlessly pay for the airline's losses. #APVIENOTAISSARAKSTS #airBaltic #Saeima #Valdība #AndrisKulbergs

@SolvitaAboltin1 @DievaSuns I know everything, I remember, and I'm not even criticizing you. I'm also not specifically looking for a reason, I'm just about a certain similarity in the process. Taking the opportunity - thank you for that expensive VIP medicine reservation for Unity's flyers.😊

@karlis_serzants @DievaSuns Kārlit, what now? You couldn't find a reason to call me out all this time! You see, you are educated enough to know and remember that I returned to where I entered politics, exactly in the position from which I left! I haven't been the most relevant figure to mention for a long time😂

The first prime minister in the last fifteen years who has delved into and understood the airBaltic problem at a specific time and place. As for what previous prime ministers and transport ministers were thinking when they casually handed out millions, I'd rather not comment… https://t.co/3WrqNm1qtQ

@Afanasijs @ltvpanorama I specifically watched it. It's a a slap in the face to all journalists of that time, including me. And a lady with such knowledge and competence holds a high position at the Occupation Museum. Panorama still has people who experienced that time themselves, so why let something like that through?

When I heard this, I choked on my tea... You can row, but like that, how that lady @ltvpanorama was rambling!!! What is happening in Moscow, the whole world heard perfectly from Radio Svoboda live broadcasts! Also in Latvia, that OMON entered Latvian Radio, it broadcast from underground radio stations. https://t.co/yMSvoTFtBN

Anecdote. The forest inhabitants want to build a bridge over the river that divides the forest. They have to swim, take risks, and it's uncomfortable. They will go to the village for help. Maybe a loan or other support. The forest king Lauva goes. The villagers order him to the WC. What bridge and what do we have to do with it? Then the sly Fox goes. They see through him, 'You're sly, you're trying to fool us, go to the WC.' A sheep goes. Comes with a caravan, lots of bridge materials and workers, impressive. How so? Very simple. The sheep agreed with sheep. A mega bridge must be built. With a nuance. The bridge will be built parallel to the river. That's how politics works. Democracy.

It's been a while since I've talked about economics, there's no time for it, so Sunday lessons are currently skipped. But here a person has written a good summary, you can read, remember, reflect. I'll highlight one quote: "Every price control, every subsidy, every centrally administered minimum wage policy ignores the basic principles of economics and results in wreckage." This is something almost no one in Latvia understands. A large part of the budget troubles, the overwhelming part, lies in this misunderstanding.

Here are the most important lessons from the Austrian School of Economics in one post: The entire edifice of modern economic policy rests on a lie: that a group of planners can manage an economy better than the people living in it. Start with value. Nothing has value in the abstract. You value a glass of water differently when you're drowning than when you're dying of thirst in the Sahara. Value lives inside individual human minds, not in objects, not in labor hours, not in government decree. Every price control, every subsidy, every centrally administered wage floor ignores this and produces predictable wreckage. Money didn't come from a government committee. It emerged spontaneously from markets, as traders across centuries converged on commodities like gold and silver because they held value across time and space. Governments didn't invent money; they hijacked it. Inflation is the expansion of the money supply itself. Rising prices are the symptom. When the Federal Reserve expanded its balance sheet from roughly $4 trillion to nearly $9 trillion between 2020 and 2022, the price explosion that followed wasn't a mystery. It was the direct, mechanical consequence of that expansion. The Fed caused it. Prices do something irreplaceable: they transmit information across millions of actors simultaneously. When lumber prices spiked in 2021, builders across North America cut waste and sought alternatives without a single bureaucrat issuing a memo. No central planner can replicate that signal, because no central planner possesses the knowledge embedded in it. This connects directly to the knowledge problem. You know your neighborhood, your suppliers, your customers, your own tolerance for risk. Your competitor knows his. A bureaucrat in Washington knows none of it. The knowledge required to run an economy is dispersed, personal, and contextual. It cannot be extracted, aggregated, and fed into a planning model. The Soviet Union ran that experiment for seventy years and produced chronic shortages of basic goods. Bad businesses must be allowed to fail. When they fail, they release labor, capital, and resources to producers who will use them more effectively. When Washington handed General Motors $49.5 billion in 2009 to prevent exactly that process, it kept misallocated capital locked inside a failing structure and punished every competitor who had managed their business responsibly. Every function government performs, a voluntary market arrangement performs better: faster, cheaper, and responsive to actual human preferences rather than political incentives. Education, roads, security, dispute resolution, all of it. Government agencies face no profit and loss signal, no competition, and no mechanism to reward performance. They optimize for budget preservation and political survival, and the people using the service have no exit option. The political class and the central banking apparatus that sustains it are the villains. Both benefit directly from the idea that expert management beats voluntary exchange. They will not surrender that idea willingly. What would you add?

🇱🇻 My strong conviction is that the Latvian language must remain independent also in the era of artificial intelligence. The future of the language today is determined not only by how many people speak it, but also by how fully it is represented in the digital environment. 🤖 For artificial intelligence to be able to understand and use Latvian qualitatively, we need: • quality and reliable language data; • unified and modern terminology; • quality translations; • digital language tools. During a visit to the State Language Center (@_vvc) we discussed that it is therefore essential to use and develop the language resources that have been built and accumulated in Latvia for years. Latvian must not become a language that technologies understand worse than others. We must ensure that Latvian can be fully used also in artificial intelligence solutions and in the digital tools of public administration. Investment in language data today is an investment in the independence of the Latvian language tomorrow. 🇱🇻
